Social Action

The work of social justice is ongoing at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim. The Social Action Committee embraces KKBE’s overall mission of an ongoing quest for greater justice, peace and acts of loving-kindness (G'milut Chasadim).  We strive to make every day a mitzvah day at KKBE. If you would like to volunteer, or have a project you would like to discuss with our Social Action Committee, please email LuAnn Rosenzweig at lu_rosenzweig@yahoo.com.

Generous donations have provided school uniforms, gifts through an annual holiday "Giving Tree", and supplies for animal shelters.  A sitting garden was created at Crisis Ministries' family center and a vegetable garden at Star Gospel Mission.  Senior members of our community are visited regularly, and lunches provided at the Charleston Senior Center.  These are just a few of the many efforts underway to lend a helping hand where needed. Special Thanks to BI-LO Charities
Special thanks and recognition go to BI-LO Charities for a generous grant that has allowed KKBE's Social Action to expand its outreach. With the assistance of this grant, we were able to address hunger relief in our community and the needs of abused and neglected children.

Some of our Social Action Partners Include:

HALOS – Helping and Lending Outreach Support
HALOS  is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide resources and special opportunities to abused and/or neglected children and their caregivers through partnerships with faith-based and other community organizations.  KKBE supports this work by providing meals for Kinship Care Support Group dinners, providing holiday and birthday gifts and back to school supplies.  www.charlestonhalos.org

American Cancer Society Hope Lodge
The first Hope Lodge in America opened in Charleston in 1970, spearheaded by KKBE’s very own Margot Freudenberg. The lodge has grown to encompass four homes along Calhoun Street, providing a “cost free” home away from home for cancer patients receiving extended treatment at area hospitals.  KKBE prepares and serves a homemade dinner to the guests at the lodge 3-4 times a year and periodically helps keep the four interconnected kitchens organized and assists in deep cleaning bedrooms. www.cancer.org

Meeting Street Academy
Their mission is to empower young people from under-resourced neighborhoods to become confident, productive and principled members of society through excellence in academics. meetingstreetacademy.com

Crisis Ministries
Crisis Ministries’ mission is to provide food, shelter and hope to end homelessness and hunger one person at a time, one family at a time. To help them with this mission, three times a year, KKBE gathers a crew of 8-10 people and within three hours we cook and serve dinner to 100 homeless citizens of Charleston. www,crisisministries.org

Kosher Food Pantry
The Charleston Jewish Community Kosher Food Pantry is our Jewish communal response to hunger in Charleston and reflects our commitment to the Jewish values of Tzedakah (justice) and Tikkun Olam (repair of the world) and to serving community members in need with Kavod (respect). KKBE helps stock the pantry with kosher food items, helps weigh and sort donations, and helps with soliciting donations
